ARCATA, Calif. - The Western Oregon University softball team defeated the No. 1 team in the NCAA west region, Humboldt State, 10-2 in the second game of a doubleheader after dropping game one 10-2, Wednesday, Apr. 15.
The spilt moved the Wolves' record to 17-19 (14-11 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) as the 'Jacks fell to 33-14. The win also helped Western Oregon snap a seven-game losing streak to HSU.
Game 1
Humboldt State went deep four times as it took game one from Western Oregon 10-2.
Their first two home runs came as part of a five-run second inning as Francesca West notched a two-run shot and Lindsay Warren added a three-run homer. Felicia Viveiros and Natalie Gallety each added home runs in the fourth as HSU opened up a 9-0 lead.
The Wolves' offense did not get anything going against HSU starter Nichole Parada (12-5) who pitched the complete game allowing six hits and two runs while walking one and striking out six.
Jessica Hallmark recorded both RBI in the game for WOU with a single in the fifth. No Wolf had more than one hit in the game. Galletly was the offensive star for HSU going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a homer, two runs scored and three RBI.
Stephanie Albrecht (4-7) suffered the loss as she lasted just 1.2 innings giving up five hits and five runs.
Game 2
Jessica Wood held Humboldt State to just two hits and Western Oregon scored eight runs in the fourth inning as it defeated HSU 10-2 in game two.
Wood (8-7) pitched all five innings allowing only the two hits and two runs to go along with two strikeouts to help WOU earn the win over the region's No. 1 team.
The score was tied at two entering the fourth inning, before WOU sent 11 batters to the plate putting up eight runs to take control of the game. The first two runners of the inning reached,
Kylee Hancock with a single and
Amanda Fleer with a walk, then
Sasha Koki singled up the middle to plate Western Oregon's first run of the inning.
Jessie Lessard was then called on to pinch hit and doubled down the line scoring Fleer. HSU then went to its game one starter Nichole Parada, who walked
Tyler Sutherland intentionally to load the bases before walking in a run by issuing a free pass to
Tierra-Lyn Cuba.
Jessica Hallmark then singled up the middle to score two and
Bailey Rueck doubled to right center before Hancock added another RBI-single to cap off the inning.
With the 10-2 lead, Wood got even stingier as she did not allow another HSU base runner in the game as Western Oregon went on the mercy rule victory after five innings.
Western Oregon took the early 1-0 lead as Sutherland led off the game with a home run to left field. Sutherland gave the Wolves the lead again in the third inning as her and Cuba had back-to-back opposite field doubles.
Offensively WOU was led by Hancock who went 3-for-3 and Sutherland who was 2-for-2 with the home run, three runs and an RBI. Cuba and Hallmark both recorded two RBI in the game to pace the club.
Next game
The Western Oregon softball team will now return home for a four-game GNAC series with Saint Martin's Apr. 18-19. The first doubleheader will be Saturday at noon with Sunday's doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
