Softball takes two from Saint Martin's

MONMOUTH, Ore.
- The Western Oregon University softball team swept a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader from Saint Martin's Saturday (Apr. 18), winning game won 10-0 and game two 8-1.

The wins moved the Wolves to 16-11 in the GNAC and evened its record at 19-19 on the season. The losses dropped the Saints to 4-21 in conference and to 6-33 on the season.

Game 1
Jessica Wood was dominant in game one, allowing just five Saint Martin's base runners as Western Oregon went on to the 10-0 victory.

Wood pitched the complete game going five innings giving up two hits and no runs while walking one and striking out six to improve her record to 9-7 this season.

The Wolves hit three solo home runs in the game, one each by Jessica Hallmark, Tyler Sutherland and Amanda Fleer, who was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. WOU also got a two hit effort from Tierra-Lyn Cuba (2-for-4). Despite scoring 10 runs no Western Oregon batter had more than one RBI in the game.

Hallmark's home run, her 10th of the season, set the Western Oregon single-season record.

WOU opened the game up with a five-run fourth inning in which it sent 10 batters to the plate to take the 10-0 lead.

Game 2
The Wolves scored all eight of their runs in the fourth inning and Jessie Lessard recorded a career-high nine strikeouts as Western Oregon won game two 8-1.

Lessard pitched all seven innings giving up three hits and one run while walking none and striking out nine for her sixth win of the season. She allowed only three of the 24 batters that came to the plate to reach base and allowed only the one runner past second base.

The Wolves broke out for eight runs in the fourth inning thanks in part to three Saints' errors which gave WOU five unearned runs. Western Oregon sent 13 batters to the plate in the innings but got just four base hits, two of which led off the inning.

Hallmark reached base in all four of her plate appearances going 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Bailey Rueck was 3-for-4 in the game and had a critical two-run single as part of the Wolves' eight-run fourth inning.

These two teams will finish out their four-game series with another doubleheader tomorrow (Apr. 19) this one starting at 11:00 a.m.
