MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Oregon lost both games of a doubleheader against Central Washington Saturday (Apr. 25), losing game one 4-3 and game two 6-4, to end its hopes of repeating as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference champions.
The losses drop the Wolves to 21-23 on the season and 18-15 in the GNAC as the Wildcats moved to 30-17 and 26-8 in conference.
Game 1
Central Washington scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning on RBI singles by Liz Wallace and Ashley Fix to win game one 4-3.
After Wallace had tied the game with a single through the right side, CWU once again loaded the bases and Fix hit a swinging bunt 10 feet in front of home to score pinch runner Devin Larson from third with two-outs.
Western Oregon collected just two hits against CWU starter Linse Vlahovich and they both came from
Tyler Sutherland, who went 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBI in the game. She gave the Wolves a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third with a three-run homer to center field.
The Wildcats would cut the Wolves' lead to one in the fourth before taking the lead for good in the fifth.
Vlahovich earned the victory as she pitched a complete game allowing two hits and three runs while walking three and striking out eight.
Game 2
Central Washington scored six unearned runs as it went on to defeat Western Oregon in game two 6-4.
After the Wolves had scored two run in the first inning on a solo home run by
Tyler Sutherland and a RBI double by
Jessica Hallmark, CWU got four runs in the second to go on top 4-2. The Wildcats were aided by two Wolves' errors to start the second which allowed the inning to be extended to GNAC RBI-leader Holly Rossman, who doubled to right center to cap of a four run inning.
WOU would tie the game on two
Amanda Fleer solo home runs, with the first coming in the third inning and the second in the fifth.
The Wildcats took the lead back for good in the top of the seventh as two Western Oregon errors led to two more runs for CWU.
The Wolves would have a chance to tie the game in the seventh as Hallmark and
Bailey Rueck reached base with one out but CWU pitcher Linse Vlahovich retired the next two batters to end the threat.
Amanda Fleer led Western Oregon at the plate going 3-for-4 with those two home runs and three runs scored.
Vlahovich picked up her second win of the day for CWU while Wood was given the loss as the winning run for Central scored while she was in the game.
