Three prepare for NCAA Championships

MONMOUTH, Ore.
- Western Oregon University will be represented at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in San Angelo, Texas, May 21-23 by Annan Applebee, Jason Slowey and Zeb Udell.

Udell will be competing in the pole vault after he earned the Wolves' only NCAA automatic qualifying standard for the outdoor season when he cleared 16-6.75 (5.05m) Apr. 18 at the Lewis & Clark Invitational. There are 19 student-athletes in the field at the national outdoor meet and Udell is tied with 10 others for the ninth seed.

Applebee is Western Oregon lone representative on the women's side. She will be the eighth seed in the women's 800m with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:11.40. She also earned a provisional standard in the 1500m but did not make the final cut.

Slowey will represent Western Oregon in the discus. He is will enter the meet as the 14th seed with a toss of 166-4 (50.69m). His mark moved him to the top of the 2009 GNAC performance list and placed him fifth all-time in GNAC history.

"The goal of every one of these student-athletes is the place at the national meet," Western Oregon head coach Mike Johnson explained. "It is not just about getting to the national meet, it is about doing something when are there. In track & field everyone is responsible for their own performance."

Western Oregon will have student-athletes representing it in the running, throwing and jumping events. "The representation we have in the various events shows our commitment to establishing a total team."

The Wolves also had four other provisional qualifiers throughout the season but missed the cutoff for Nationals. The individuals which earned provisional standards were Anthony Marin in the hammer, Tyler Reisnaur in the triple jump, Mandy Keifer in the heptathlon and Jeff Long in the 800m.
