BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Oregon University soccer team dropped its Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener to defending league champions Western Washington 3-0 Friday, Sept. 11.
The Vikings were able to put three goals on the board in the final 28 minutes of play after both teams battled to a 0-0 tie in the first half. With the loss the Wolves fell to 1-3-2 (0-1-0 GNAC) on the season as the Vikings moved to 2-2-1 (1-0-0 GNAC).
The eventual game-winning goal came on a double assist as Kelly Irving fed it to Molly Shannon who found Bryn Gibson who deposited the ball in the far right corner of the net from eight yards to give WWU a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute.
The Wolves managed to hang in the game throughout much of the game despite being outshot 7-1. Kylie Broadbent, a 2008 first team all-conference performer earned the shutout for the Vikings as
Brittney Rigtrup and
Kelsie Blachly split time in goal again for the Wolves with Rigtrup playing the posts in the first half before Blachly took over at halftime.
Western Oregon's next game will be at Corban in Salem, Ore., on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 3:00 p.m.
