SALEM, Ore.
- Rachelle Kliewer scored an unassisted goal with 38 seconds left in regulation to help the Western Oregon University soccer team earn a 3-3 tie against Corban College, Tuesday (Sept. 15).

With time winding down, Kliewer slipped past two Corban defenders and slot the ball into the far post from 10 yards out for her second goal of the match. The goal by Kliewer was her fifth of the season and came on the heals of Corban taking a 3-2 lead with only 83 seconds remaining.

"It was a very pretty goal and a well executed play by Rachelle," Western Oregon head soccer coach Rod Fretz explained. "We were able to keep taking it at them and the goal just killed Corban's momentum it had built heading into overtime."

Both teams would go scoreless in overtime but the Wolves nearly came up with another late-game heroic as Katrina Kem's header was saved by the Corban goalie with less than a minute to play.

This was the third tie in its past four contests for the Wolves (1-3-3) and moves the Warriors' record to 3-3-2.

The teams matched up evenly in the box score as both posted 13 shots while WOU had a 5-4 advantage in saves and Corban a 9-5 edge in corner kicks. The WOU goalies combined for four saves (Brittney Rigtrup-3, Kelsie Blachly-1).

Corban got on the board first at the 14th minute when Emily Tsugawa scored her second goal of the season. Western Oregon answered back before halftime on a 20-yard strike from Kliewer which found its way into the net as it sailed over the goalie's head.

"We were lucky to be tied at the half," Fretz continued. "We came out flat to start the game and had to dig our way back into the game."

The Wolves would take their only lead of the game in the 64th minute on Cori Young's first goal of the season. Young received a through ball from Marina Austin and flicked it over the keeper to put WOU in front 2-1.

Corban then put up goals in the 72nd and 88th minutes as the Warriors cashed in deflections off of the Wolves' goalie.

"We need to find our energy in the next couple days," noted Fretz.

The Western Oregon soccer team will now host Seattle Pacific, the No. 1 ranked team in NCAA Division II, Thursday, Sept. 17 at 4:00 p.m.
