GOLDEN, Colo. -
Tarance Glynn banked in a contested 10-foot jumper with four seconds on the clock to give Western Oregon a 63-62 win over Colorado School of Mines, Saturday (Jan. 2), in the Metro State/Mines Holiday Classic.
Western Oregon wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 7-4 record and a 3-0 mark in games decided by five points or less. CSM fell to 4-7 with the loss.
Neither team ever led by more than five points in the contest, but it would be the Wolves' ability to close out a game that would earn them the win. WOU scored the last four points of the game to overcome a three-point deficit with 46 seconds remaining. First
Mike McLaughlin found
Kyle Long under the hoop to pull the Wolves to within one, at 62-61 with 32 seconds remaining. WOU then fouled Gordon Galloway to send him to the free throw line, where he missed the frontend of a 1-and-1.
WOU then set up for a final shot, but when that play went array it was Glynn who saved the game for the Wolves. "Tarance made a play after our set (play) broke down," said WOU head coach Craig Stanger. "He was able to put the ball on the ground, find some space and will the ball in the hoop over the defender."
Rico Myles paced the Wolves' offense with a career-high 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Glynn was the only other Wolf in double-figures with 10. McLaughlin led the team with nine boards, and Myles added eight. Point guard
Blair Wheadon scored just seven points in the contest but dished out a season-best five assists. Colorado School of Mines was led by Dale Minschwaner's 22 points and eight rebounds.
Western Oregon outshot Colorado School of Mines 49.1-percent to 40-percent in a game which saw the teams combine to go just 7-of-36 (19.4-percent) from beyond the arc. WOU was also able to overcome a 22-11 advantage for CSM in free throw attempts en route to earning the win.
"This was a good preparation game for our young guys as we enter league play," noted Stanger.
Western Oregon will now prepare to start Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Thursday, Jan. 7th, at 7:30 p.m., against Central Washington, in Ellensburg, Wash.
