MONMOUTH, Ore. - In a tightly contested battle, Western Oregon was able to come away with wins in the final three sets to defeat Central Washington, 18-25, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-23, on Senior Day (Oct. 30).
The win kept Western Oregon (12-8, 10-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) within a half-match of third place Alaska Anchorage in the GNAC standings. The loss dropped Central Washington to 10-9 on the season and to 8-6 in the GNAC.
"This was an important match for us and keeps all of our goals alive," explained Western Oregon head coach
Brad Saindon. "We still want to finish third in this conference and go to the NCAA tournament."
Krissi Kemper led three Wolves in double figures with 14 kills.
Danielle Reese added a double-double with 12 kills and a season-high 24 digs. Senior
Stephanie Beeler got in the mix with nine kills and 15 digs. WOU also got 10 kills out of
Samantha Ward, 19 digs out of
Megan Triggs and 46 assists from senior
Jorden Burrows.
After dropping the opening set, Western Oregon fought back to take the next three sets in order. However, the most notable point was the final one of the match which went Western Oregon's way on a controversial no-call.
"I feel really bad that the match ended on that note," explained Saindon. "It was a really good match and it is never good to have a controversial call end it. So I feel bad for Central Washington because that was probably their point."
Both teams played a very even match with hitting percentage, blocks and kills all being nearly equal amongst the teams.
"We are not playing our best right now, so I felt that match was all about will," said Saindon. "We put in a scheme specifically for Central Washington. We were going to try and block a certain thing and dig everyone else, and it worked out pretty well."
The win also completed a sweep by the Wolves in three home events today, as they sent all three senior classes out with a win.
"I am going to miss those two kids (Beeler and Burrows) big time," said Saindon. "I am really happy that we were not only about to send them out of here with a win, but against a really good team and a very exciting match."
The Wolves will have just one match next week when they face travel partner Saint Martin's on Saturday, Nov. 6.
