LAIE, Hawaii – For the second season in a row, Western Oregon had no answer for BYU-Hawaii's Jet Chang, who scored 21 points to lead the Seasiders over the Wolves 71-55 on Friday, Dec. 17.
The Wolves had a two-point advantage at the break (26-24) but BYUH shot 73.6 percent in the second half (17-of-23) to erase the deficit. Chang had 15 of his 21 point in the period, as he hit 5-of-7 shots from the field.
Blair Wheadon,
Jordan Freelander and
Zach Davis all scored 10 points to lead Western Oregon (6-6, 1-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference). The 10 points for Davis, who hit all five of his shots from the field, were a career-high for the junior from Folsom, Calif. Freelander scored all 10 of his points in the second half as he missed just one shot from the field (5-of-6).
Tarance Glynn had six assists and seven boards to pace WOU in both categories.
After the Wolves scored the first basket of the second half to go up by four, the teams traded baskets until a three-pointer by Chang gave BYUH the lead (33-32), one which the Seasiders would never relinquish. That basket also started a 14-2 run which pushed their lead into double-figures.
Western Oregon cut the lead to nine (59-50) with 3:36 remaining, but BYUH answered with eight unanswered points to squash any hope of a Wolves' comeback.
WOU also shot well in the second half (13-of-27), but hit just 2-of-18 shots from behind the arc in the game.
Marques Whippy added 14 boards for BYU-Hawaii (5-3), who outrebounded WOU 35-27. Heath Gameren also contributed with a game-high eight dishes.
Last season, BYU-Hawaii earned a 94-86 victory at Western Oregon behind 27 points from Chang when the Seasiders were ranked No. 1 in the nation.
The Western Oregon will now begin a two-week competition hiatus over the Holidays before returning to action on Dec. 30 at Seattle Pacific.
