MONMOUTH, Ore. - Six Wolves scored in double-figures and the Western Oregon University women's basketball team had its first 100-point outing since the 2001-02 season in a 102-61 victory over Alaska Fairbanks, Saturday (Feb. 20).
Western Oregon (11-16) shot a season-best 58-percent in the win hitting 37-of-64 shots. The Wolves also had their best shooting game from three-point range and from the free throw line. They connected on 10-of-17 from behind the arc (59-percent) and 18-of-20 at the line. Meanwhile, WOU held Alaska Fairbanks (2-22) to 37-percent shooting from the field.
"Probably our best game all year in all three shooting categories," said Western Oregon head coach Greg Bruce. "We finally were able to put it together in all three areas tonight."
Lorrie Clifford led Western Oregon with a career-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting.
Katie Torland had 14, and
Sara Zahler and
Hannah Whitsett each added 13.
Meaghan White registered 12 off the bench as the Wolves' bench outscored the Nanooks' 45-2.
Shayla Corder also had 10 points in a starting role.
"We got contributions from lots of kids and the bench," commented Bruce.
Western Oregon a positive assist-to-turnover ratio for the third time this year dishing out 17 assists while turning it over 13 times. Corder led the team with four assists while four others recorded at least two. "Our goal was to have a positive assist-to-turnover ratio and we met that goal today," noted Bruce.
The 102 points is the most for Western Oregon since scoring 113 in a win over Alaska Anchorage Dec. 6, 2001.
"This was a good win for our team and gives us some momentum heading into next week," Bruce continued.
The Wolves will now take to the road for a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference contests against Northwest Nazarene (Feb. 25) and Montana State Billings (Feb. 27).
