LACEY, Wash. - Western Oregon and Saint Martin's split a pair of tightly contested Great Northwest Athletic Conference games Saturday (Mar. 13). The Saints (5-10, 3-3 GNAC) claimed game one 2-1 before the Wolves (7-8, 5-5) won game two 3-2 in 13 innings.
Game 1
Joslyn Eugenio (2-5) doubled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh and pitched a complete game while scattering six hits to lead Saint Martin's to a 2-1 win in game one.
Eugenio also carried the Saints's offense with a double, a triple and both runs batted in, while and Kirstin Davidson combined for four of the Saints' 10 hits. Kristine Kaneshiro scored both runs for SMU.
The Wolves got on the board first in the top of the second when
Ellen Bogardus singled down the right field line to plate
Jessica Hallmark from second.
SMU answered back in the bottom of the third as Eugenio tripled with two out to drive in Kaneshiro and tie the game at 1-1.
Saint Martin's would finally break the tie in the bottom of the seventh after Kaneshiro reached base on a fielder's choice with two out and Eugenio doubled to drive her in for the winning run.
Bogardus had two of the Wolves' six hits and their only RBI.
Kelsey White started the game for Western Oregon and went the first 5.2 innings while giving up eight hits and one run.
Jessica Wood (0-3) took the loss.
Game 2
Jessie Lessard didn't come into the game until the ninth inning but she made the most of her opportunity, as she picked up the win and knocked in the game-winning run in extra innings.
In the top of the 13th inning with one out,
Kendra George singled to left and advanced to second on a groundout by
Tyler Sutherland bringing Lessard to the plate with a runner in scoring position. Lessard smacked the ball to center field to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead.
Lessard then went out to the circle and set the Saints down in order to complete 4.2 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit en route to picking up her second win of the season. Lessard entered the game with two runners in scoring position and one out in the bottom of the ninth with the game tied at 2-2. She got Jaimee Aiwohi to ground to third base and the Wolves were able to cut down the runner at home for the second out. Lessard then induced another roller to third and
Bailey Rueck threw across the diamond for the third out to end the Saints' threat.
Amanda Fleer went 4-for-6 with a stolen base for the Wolves, while
Kendra George and Sutherland added two hits apiece. George scored all three runs for WOU, which left 15 runners on base.
Joslyn Eugenio had three of the Saints' seven hits in the game. Amanda Arzen started the game and went 9.2 innings allowing eight hits and two runs (one earned). She received a no-decision after Eugenio surrendered the game-winning hit to Lessard in the 13th.
The Wolves used a combination of pitchers in the game.
Stephanie Albrecht started the game and went the first 2.1 innings before giving way to
Brittany Reeves for six innings of one-run ball. Lessard finished out the game by allowing the Saints only one baserunner in the final 4.2 innings.
The Wolves scored first in the extra frames as George led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by Sutherland. She then came home on a passed ball. However, the lead was short lived as answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning before Lessard came in and closed the door.
The Wolves are now 2-0 in games decided in extra innings.
