Wolves drop two in Turlock

Bailey Rueck wnet 7-for-7 in the two games

TURLOCK, Calif.
- The Western Oregon University softball dropped both games on the opening day of the Mizuno Tournament of Champions. The Wolves fell in game one 4-3 to Cal State San Bernardino and lost the next game to UC San Diego 6-3.

The losses dropped the Wolves to 13-10 on the season.

Game 1
Felicia Cervantes singled in the in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and give Cal State San Bernardino the 4-3 win.

Tyler Sutherland had two doubles and scored two runs for the Wolves. Bailey Rueck went 3-for-3 and had one of WOU's three RBI for the game. Andrea Bailey and Amanda Fleer provided the other runs batted in.

WOU got on the board first in the bottom of the first on an RBI ground out by Fleer to plate Sutherland from third. The Coyotes then scored the next three runs and the Wolves faced a 3-1 deficit heading into the bottom of the sixth.

After the first two batters of the inning got out, WOU mounted a two-run rally. Sutherland and Bailey hit back-to-back doubles to score the first run. Rucked then followed with a single to score Bailey and tie the game at 3-3.

Game 2
Bailey Rueck went 4-for-4 and the Wolves collected 10 hits but it was not enough to overcome UC San Diego, as they fell 6-3.

UC San Diego made the most of their seven hits by pushing six runs across. Only Rhiannon Ousley had a multi-hit or multi-RBI performance, as she went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

Tess Granath picked up the win in relief after holding WOU to four hits and one run over the final 4.1 innings.

Next games
The WOU softball team will continue its schedule at the Tournament of Champions on Saturday (Mar. 27), with a trio of games. They will start with Notre Dame de Namur at 10:00 a.m., then take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 12:15 p.m. WOU will end the evening with Sonoma State at 6:30 p.m.
