ARCATA, Calif. - Not only did the Western Oregon University softball team have to take a detour to get to Arcata, Calif., it had to deal with a change in venue and time. The Wolves arrived in Arcata in the late hours of Monday night and had to be out to the ball field for a 10:00 a.m., first pitch against national powerhouse Humboldt State. In the first of two doubleheaders in the series, the Wolves lost game one 6-1 and game two 5-2.
Despite the losses,
Tyler Sutherland was able to extend her hitting streak to 11 games. She went 4-for-7 in the twinbill, including hitting her fourth home run of the season.
Western Oregon now stands at 5-6 on the season (4-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference). The wins were the fifth-straight for Humboldt State, as it evened its record at 8-8 on the year (2-6 California Collegiate Athletic Association).
Game 1
Tyler Sutherland went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and a stolen base but that was all the offense the Wolves could muster in a 6-1 loss.
WOU had chances to score in the game, as it placed at least two runners on base in each of the first five innings. However, the run scoring hit eluded them as it left 10 runners on base.
Lindsay Warren and Chrissy Stalf did the damage for the Lumberjacks offensively. Warren went 3-for-3 with a double, two home runs and three RBI. Stalf was 1-of-3 with two RBI, which included a two-run double to break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third.
Vaneza Hoover (4-5) earned the win with a complete game one-run, four-hit performance. She walked eight WOU hitters in the contest but managed to escape damage by stranding 10 runners.
Jessie Lessard (1-3) took the loss.
Game 2
Gracie Perez (3-1) held Western Oregon to two runs on five hits while striking out seven en route to delivering the Lumberjacks second complete game outing of the doubleheader.
Five different Wolves collected hits, but it was
Jessica Hallmark's two-run pinch hit homer that accounted for the team's only runs.
Chrissy Stalf went 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI for HSU, and Courtney Hiatt added two hits and an RBI.
The Wolves cut the lead to 3-2 on the home run by Hallmark in the top of the sixth inning, but the Lumberjacks answered with two more in their half of the inning for the final margin of victory.
Next games
These teams will try to get one more doubleheader in tomorrow (Mar. 10) at 10:00 a.m., before the rains come and the Wolves travel home.
