MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon University track & field team will be well represented by freshmen javelin throwers at the NCAA Division II National Championships, May 27-29, in Charlotte, N.C.
The Wolves had six individuals qualify for the national championships, with four of those coming in the javelin throw. First-year team members
Carolanne Powers and
Amanda Schumaker will represent Western Oregon on the women's side, while
Will Crook and
Nathan Rowlett will throw for the Wolves on the men's side. Joining the javelin throwers from the men's team will be
Chris Reed and
Ashley Potter from the women's team.
Carolanne Powers (Salem, Ore./McNary High School) enters nationals as the No. 3 ranked individual on the women's field. She recorded a season-long toss of 154-9 (47.19m) at the 2010 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships to earn her automatic qualifying mark to nationals.
Amanda Schumaker (Gladstone, Ore.) also posted her career-long throw at the GNAC Championships, with a mark of 146-6 (44.66m). Her throw was the ninth-best in the country this season and just short of an auto qualifying standard.
Will Crook (Jewell, Ore.) registered a throw of 202-0 (61.57m) at the Pacific Twilight to punch his ticket to nationals. He will enter the field as the No. 11 seed.
Nathan Rowlett (Portland, Ore.) was the last member of the men's javelin field to be selected. He will enter the championships as the 16th student-athlete in the field. Rowlett also recorded his season-long throw of 199-4 (60.76m) at the GNAC Championships.
Chris Reed (Klamath Falls, Ore.) will be the only student-athlete from Western Oregon representing the Wolves in two events. Reed qualified for the men's 5k with a time of 14:24.24 and the 10k with a time of 29:52.39. He is the No. 12 seed in the 10k, and the No. 12 seed in the 5k.
Ashley Potter (Springfield, Ore.) earned a trip to nationals in the triple jump in her first season with the Wolves. Potter posted a provisional qualifying mark with a leap of 39-8.75 (12.11m) at the Stanford Invite. She is tied for eighth in the country entering the meet.
This will be the first trip to the national outdoor championships for all six student-athletes.
Last season, Western Oregon sent three student-athletes to the national championships.
