Wolves sweep 'Jacks; move to 2-0

Reese had nine kills and seven aces in the Wolves' win

MONMOUTH, Ore.
- The Western Oregon University volleyball team moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 25-12, 25-21 and 25-23 victory over Humboldt State in the morning session of the Phoenix Inn GNAC Conference Challenge, Friday, Sept. 3.

Danielle Reese and Samantha Ward paced the Wolves' balanced attack with nine kills apiece. On the other side of that was Jorden Burrows who dished out a career-high 37 assists and also added nine digs. Sylvia Herrold led Western Oregon's defensive effort with a career-high 16 digs. Megan Triggs and Reese added 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

"I thought we played a really good match," said Western Oregon head coach Brad Saindon. "We were balanced in our attack and I think we took a step forward as a team."

Reese was also on with the serve as she registered seven aces with no errors.

Oceana Matsubu led Humboldt State (0-1) with 12 kills.

In set one the Wolves posted an impressive .406 hitting percentage and never trailed en route to the 25-12 win. They registered 14 kills to go along with just one error. Ward led the way with four kills in seven attempts to post a .571 hitting percentage. Burrows assisted on 13 of the Wolves' 14 kills.

Western Oregon continued its success in set two by notching 15 kills to go along with 25 digs. Burrow posted a set-high seven digs and also posted her second straight set of double digit assists with 11. Reese had a team-best four kills, while Ward and Blees each added three. WOU did not lead at any point in a set which featured 10 ties until it grabbed the lead at 20-19. The set was closed on two straight aces by sophomore Danielle Reese.

In the third set, Krissi Kemper posted five of her six kills and the Wolves fought through for their sixth straight set win. Burrows also posted her third straight set with over 11 assists.

"It was a close match but we did a good job plugging away till we were able to separate ourselves," Saindon continued. "If we can get everything on the same page we are really going to do some damage."

The Wolves will play another match tonight against No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino at 8:00 p.m.
