MONMOUTH, Ore.
– The Western Oregon University women's soccer team's offense found a way to keep constant pressure on Simon Fraser to lead the team to a 1-0 victory on Saturday, Oct. 1st, at WOU Soccer Field.

The Wolves (3-5-1, 2-3-1 GNAC) offense woke up as they entered the final 45 minutes of play. They constantly attacked the Clan's defense until they found the right break for them to attack and put the ball into the net.

In the 54th minute of action, Western Oregon got the best of Simon Fraser when Marina Austin was in the right place at the right time. Following Lindsay Bauman's shot from the top of the box that was blocked by the Clan's sliding goal keeper, Austin rebounded the ball and deposited it in the back of the net as SFU defenders scrambled to block the goal. This was the third goal of the season for the junior from Olympia, Wash.

The Wolves had many chances on goal during their offensive onslaught in which they outshot the Clan 22-2. During the second half they reached a point where it looked like Simon Fraser's goalie was going to make another mistake and get crossed up. However, Bauman's shot went just right of the goal.

“We came back (from Thursday) and played hard from the start,” said WOU women's soccer head coach Steve Ancheta. “We're working on building confidence to play in a league that calls for a high level of play.”

WOU senior goalie. Brittney Rigtrup, earned a career-best four shutouts in a season with the Wolves' 1-0 win today. Rigtrup and the Western Oregon defense worked together throughout the match to limit the Clan's chances of getting anywhere near her and the goal box.

WOU outshot SFU 11-0 in the first half, and 11-2 in the final 45 minutes.

Western Oregon will be back in action one week from today, Oct. 8th, when they head back on the road again to face Saint Martin's. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.

“We should see a good game on the road, there is no easy win in this league,” Ancheta concluded.
