ARCATA, Calif.
– The Wolves saw their opportunity to capture their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference title slip through their fingers. No. 14 Humboldt State came out with a determination on both sides of the ball and seized the conference championship, and a possible playoff berth, with a 37-7 win on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Redwood Bowl.

Lyndon Rowells was the driving force for the Lumberjack (9-1, 7-1 GNAC) offense with 246 yards and a touchdown on the ground on 38 carries. Many of those yards were gained after first contact, as he fought through many arm tackles by the Wolves. Quarterback Mike Proulx also impressed with 236 yards passing and three touchdowns.

On the other side of the ball, the Wolves (6-5, 6-2 GNAC) could not get any traction offensively. They were held to 177 yards of total offense compared to 483 for the Lumberjacks. Their quarterbacks were also picked off seven times and were forced to only throw deep by a stingy Lumberjack defense.

Humboldt State jumped out to the early lead with two early touchdown passes from Proulx to Kevin Miles in the first quarter to carry a 20-0 lead into the half. The Lumberjacks would build their lead to 30 points before Western Oregon got on the board with an 18 yard pass from Cory Bean to Royce Spencer midway through the fourth quarter.

Brian Blumberg provided the special teams spark for HSU by hitting all three of his field goal attempts.

The loss ends the Wolves' season at 6-5 and in second place in the GNAC with a record of 6-2.
