MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon volleyball team closes out the regular season this week as the Wolves host a pair of important Great Northwest Athletic Conference matches, hosting Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7:00 p.m. followed by the regular season finale against Alaska Anchorage on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 7:00 p.m. Admission to each crucial contest is $6 for adults, $4 for non-WOU students and seniors, and free to current WOU students.
Western Oregon enters the week with a mark of 12-8 overall and 11-5 in GNAC play after sweeping Saint Martin's, 3-0, in its only contest last week. The Wolves are currently tied for fourth in the league with Northwest Nazarene and are two games back of Western Washington and Alaska Anchorage for second-place.
In the win over Saint Martin's, Western Oregon got 11 kills from
Samantha Ward and 10 from
Becky Blees as the Wolves held the Saints to an .082 attack percentage. On the season, Western Oregon has held opponents to a .176 attack percentage as Blees leads the conference with 1.07 blocks per set.
Alaska Fairbanks enters the week with a record of 2-22 overall and 2-14 in league play after falling to Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene last week. The Nanooks and Wolves are tied in the all-time series at 11-11; however, the Wolves have won three straight after winning, 3-2, earlier this season.
Alaska Anchorage enters the week with a mark of 17-7 overall and tied for second in the league with a 13-3 conference record. The meeting marks the 22nd in series history between the Seawolves and Wolves as the series is tied, 11-11. Western Oregon captured the first contest of the year, winning 3-2 in Anchorage on Sept. 8.
The match against the Seawolves will mark the final home game for senior defensive specialist
Cally Young, who will be honored prior to the start of the match.
