MONMOUTH, Ore. –
Blair Wheadon scored a career-high 34 points but it was not enough to overcome 35 second chance points for Alaska Anchorage as the Wolves fell, 88-83, on Saturday, Feb. 19.
Wheadon went 11-of-15 from the field and hit all six of his 3-point attempts in the first half. Wheadon scored 20 of his 34 points in the first half, including 17 of the Wolves (13-13, 8-8) first 20. He also added five assists, two steals and a block.
Matching Wheadon every step of the way was Alaska Anchorage's Brandon Walker. Walker scored 40 points as he hit 10-of-15 shots from behind the line. His 10 treys matched the GNAC single-game record. He also recorded a double-double with a team-leading 10 rebounds.
The Wolves built a 37-31 lead the half and extended it nine early in the second period. UAA (19-8, 11-5 GNAC) then whittled away at the Wolves' lead before going on top 48-47 on a Walker 3-pointer.
Western Oregon would fight back and take a two-point lead at 60-58. The teams would exchange baskets before UAA grabbed the lead for good at 70-69. Western Oregon did not quit however, as it cut the lead to three at 83-80 on a free throw by
Jordan Freelander.
Walker had the answer for the Seawolves. With the shot clock winding down, he dribbled right and pulled up, with Freelander playing tight defense, and banked the ball into to put UAA up six with 26 seconds remaining.
Freelander answered with another 3 but Drew Robinson knocked down the ensuing two free throws to secure the win for UAA.
Kolton Nelson had a strong game for the Wolves in the scoring column and on the boards. He knocked down 6-of-10 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. He also grabbed 12 rebounds with six of those coming on the offensive glass.
Western Oregon's bench came through to outscore UAA's 16-4.
Kris White and
Jamaal Veal each scored six points after subbing into the game to lead the Wolves' effort.
The Wolves next game will be on the road at Northwest Nazarene on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 p.m.
