BURNABY, B.C. - Host Simon Fraser stole both games of a doubleheader, 5-3 and 3-2, from the Western Oregon softball team in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Sunday (Mar. 6).
Western drops to 5-6 (2-4 GNAC) with the losses, while SFU improves to 2-0 (2-0 GNAC) in their first-ever NCAA Division II season after winning the 2010 NAIA national championship.
Game 1
In the opener, the Wolves got home runs from senior
Jessica Hallmark (Salem, Ore./Sprague) and freshman
Tia Misfeldt (Grants Pass, Ore./Grants Pass) but the Clan scored five straight runs, including a three-run sixth inning, to earn the come-from-behind win.
The game was scoreless through four innings before Hallmark homered to open the fifth. Two batters later, Misfeldt sent one over the left-center field fence to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman
Danielle Harcourt (St. Helens, Ore./St. Helens) would single, and then advance to second before sophomore
Andrea Bailey (Gresham, Ore./Barlow) drove her in with a double to left center, putting WOU up 3-0.
Simon Fraser responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and three in the bottom of the sixth. The go-ahead run came on a sacrifice fly from Clan centerfielder Brittany Mayers.
The home run was Hallmark's 32nd of her career. She entered her senior season as the school's career home run leader. It was Misfeldt's first career homer.
Harcourt led the Wolves with two hits.
Freshman
Alex Hillmick (Pendleton, Ore./Pendleton) took the loss for Western. She pitched six innings, giving up seven hits while fanning two.
SFU left fielder Megan Durrant drove in two runs on two hits. Clan pitcher Cara Lukawesky earned the win behind a seven-strikeout, one-walk performance.
Game 2
In the nightcap, Simon Fraser came back from an early 2-0 hole, scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth to survive a solid outing from WOU pitcher
Jessica Wood (The Dalles, Ore./The Dalles-Wahtonka).
The Wolves struck early, scoring its two runs in the top of the first behind senior Wood. Bailey and senior
Tierra-Lyn Cuba (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani) both singled to start the inning before Hallmark was walked two batters later. Wood hit a double to right center, driving in both Bailey and Cuba, giving Western a 2-0 lead.
SFU would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. Third baseman Carley LePoutre drove in the first run before an error allowed her to score on the next play.
In the bottom of the sixth, Mayers scored the game-winning run on an unearned passed ball, giving SFU the victory.
Wood collected two hits to go along with her two RBI. She also pitched six innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out four. She was saddled with the loss.
SFU first baseman Kelsey Haberl led the Clan with two hits. Pitcher Kelsey Hawkins threw a six-hit, nine-strikeout complete game to earn the win.

The Wolves will face Simon Fraser in another doubleheader tomorrow before returning to Monmouth. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. (PST).
