TURLOCK, Calif. - The Western Oregon softball team lost a pair of close games on the final day of pool play at the 2011 Tournament of Champions Saturday. The Wolves fell to No. 16 UC San Diego (3-1) and Cal State San Bernardino (2-1).
The losses drop WOU to 9-18 on the season.
Game One
No. 16 UC San Diego overcame an early deficit to defeat Western 3-1 in the Wolves' first game of day.
WOU struck first in the third inning. After two quick outs, sophomore
Andrea Bailey drew a walk. Senior
Tierra-Lyn Cuba followed with a single to center field before junior
Bailey Rueck hit a single down the right field line, scoring Bailey.
The Tritons evened the score in the fourth inning on an RBI single. The go-ahead run came in the sixth inning on a fielder's choice. UCSD would add an insurance run later in the inning on a second RBI single.
Junior
Kelsie Didion was walked to start the seventh inning but would be stranded on first as UC San Diego notched three straight outs to end the game.
Senior
Jessica Wood (4-12) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and two walks. She struck out three.
Senior
Jessica Hallmark recorded her third double of the tournament.
Game Two
Cal State San Bernardino scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning, beating WOU 2-1 in the Wolves' final game of the day.
CSUSB took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning behind an error.
The Wolves responded with a run of its own in the third. Sophomore
Andrea Bailey hit a one-out single up the middle before senior
Jessica Hallmark's double drove her in two at-bats later.
An RBI double in the fourth scored the Coyotes' game-winning run.
WOU left a player on base in both the fifth and sixth innings but were unable to get anything going down the stretch.
Freshman
Alex Hillmick (4-6) gave up six hits in six innings of work. She allowed one earned run while fanning three and walking two.
Bailey led Western with two hits and matched Hallmark with a double of her own. She also registered a stolen base.
Next Time Out
Western will conclude the three-day tournament in the four-team Platinum Bracket tomorrow. WOU will face the fourth-placed team from Pool A (yet to be determined) at 9 am in the first round. If they win, the Wolves will meet the winner of the other first-round game (Cal State San Bernardino vs. Notre Dame de Namur) at 2:30 pm.
