ARCATA, Calif. – Carly Kolpin's goal in the 26th minute lifted the Jacks over Western Oregon University, 1-0, on Thursday, Sept. 1st, at College Creek Soccer Field.
The Wolves and Jacks battled throughout the first half, but it was Kolpin's first goal of the season with an assist from Bre Taylor that made the difference. After a foul in the 26th minute of the match by the Wolves, Kolpin volleyed the ball off a cross on the left.
"They were a big, physical team and that caught us off guard early," said Western Oregon's first-year head coach
Steve Ancheta. "We had to learn from that first half."
Western Oregon was able to get four shots fired on Humboldt State goalie.
Taylor Thompson,
Kymberly Witmer,
Marina Austin, and
LaChante Horton each had one shot.
Wolves' senior goalie,
Brittney Rigtrup, had four saves in the match. Humboldt State had 10 shots in the game.
"We didn't get the win but I thought we had lots of positives in the game," explained Ancheta. "We played hard against a quality team and were able to dominate that second half."
The Wolves are now 7-10-1 all-time against the Jacks. The last time Western Oregon defeated Humboldt State was August 28th, 2008 in Monmouth (2-1).
"We have some tough teams to play but we are going to continue to look forward to the next challenge," concluded Ancheta.
Western Oregon next match will be Sept. 3rd when they travel to San Francisco State to face the Gators. Kickoff is at 3:00 p.m.
