MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon women's soccer team accomplished a task which it has not done since 2001; start the first two matches of its Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule undefeated.
Today the Wolves battled Montana State Billings to a 1-1 tie at the WOU Soccer Field. The tie moves Western Oregon to 1-1-0 in the GNAC and to 2-2-2 on the season. The tie was the first of the season for MSUB, who is now 4-1-1 (1-1-0 GNAC).
Kymberly Witmer had the lone goal of the match for the Wolves in the 12th minute. She found herself open at the top of the box after the Yellowjacket defender could not control the ball in the air. Witmer took advantage of the mistake and quickly deposited the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.
The Yellowjackets would get the equalizer in the 36th minute of the game on a header by Heidi Greenback. She was able to go up high for the ball on a cross from Whitney Siler had head it into the goal to tie the match at 1-1.
After the goal by MSUB the scoring opportunities would be limited for both teams. The Wolves would get six shots on goal but many came from outside the box. The best opportunity for either tam came in the second overtime when Wolves' forward
LaChante Horton was able to beat the goalie to the ball right outside the box, but with the goalie rushing forward and two defenders approaching from behind her shot sailed over the goal.
"We wanted to win but we felt even a tie would be good here today," explained Western Oregon head coach
Steve Ancheta. "I thought my team played its heart out and gave it everything they had. It was two great teams battling today through double overtime."
Brittney Rigtrup saw her streak of 235 minutes without allowing a goal end in the match, but still recorded three saves as her record moved to 2-2-2. The Wolves defense allowed just four shots on goal during the match.
"We played hard today and now the learning process is how you play from Thursday to Saturday and play two games really hard," concluded Ancheta.
Western Oregon is now undefeated in its last four contests (two win and two ties).
The Wolves next match will be on the road at Central Washington on Sept. 22, at 4:00 p.m.
