MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's soccer team moved its unbeaten streak to three straight games as the Wolves defeated Saint Martin's, 2-0, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Thursday. With the victory, WOU moved to 5-5-1, 3-3-1 in league play, while the Saints fell to 5-6-0 overall, 3-4-0 in conference action.
“I thought we played extremely well and we have continued to progress throughout the last few matches,” head coach
Steve Ancheta said. “We did what we need to do with the recent homestand and now we have five tough road matches coming up. I think our confidence is building at the right time.”
The Wolves broke through in the 22nd minute as
Marina Austin connected on a shot for her third goal of the season. Off a cross from
Lindsay Bauman, Austin collected the pass and calmly shot it into the top-left hand corner of the net from 10-yards out to give WOU an early 1-0 lead.
Bauman would net the only goal of the second half on a beautiful shot in the 69th minute to make the score 2-0. Off a throw-in from
Danielle Hayward, Bauman took the ball and dribbled left just outside the box. As she freed herself 20-yards from net, she curled the ball into the upper left-hand corner of the net for her third goal of the season.
The WOU defense managed to close out the contest as the Wolves limited the Saints to just five shots on the contest and only one on goal. The Wolves have now shut-out two straight conference opponents for the first time since the 2008 season.
Hilary Lutz picked up her second career shutout while making one save in the win as Ashley Engel made five stops in goal for the Saints in the loss.
WOU held a decided, 16-5 edge in shots while holding an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Wolves will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, as WOU travels to Billings, Mont., to face Montana State Billings at 12:00 p.m.
