Box Score MONMOUTH, Ore. – Lindsay Bauman's goal in the 109th minute gave the Western Oregon women's soccer team its third consecutive shutout victory as the Wolves defeated league-leading Montana State Billings, 1-0, in double overtime on Saturday. With the victory, WOU moves to 6-5-1 overall, 4-3-1 in league play, as the Yellowjackets fall to 10-2-0 overall, 6-2-0 in conference action.
“To be able to come on the road against one of the best teams in the league and come away with three points is absolutely fantastic,” head coach
Steve Ancheta said. “They had us on our heels during he first 15 minutes; but, we responded well and Lindsay had an incredible strike to give us the win. I'm really proud of the squad right now.”
During the course of the first 90 minutes, the backlines from both squads held tight as neither team could manage to find the back of the net as the match went into overtime.
After the first 10 minutes of overtime where neither team could manage a quality scoring chance, Bauman's fourth-goal of the season gave the Wolves three points and an important road victory.
With less than two minutes remaining, Bauman collected the ball about 15 yards from the goal and fired a shot over the arms of the MSUB keeper and into the net for the golden goal.
The victory marked the third-consecutive shutout of a league opponent for the Wolves as WOU stretched its unbeaten streak to four games. WOU has not blanked three opponents in a row since 1999 and has never posted three straight shutouts since the move to NCAA Division II.
Hillary Lutz picked up the win for the Wolves as she made a career-high eight saves while Alko Johnson took the loss while making five saves for the Yellowjackets.
In an evenly fought contest, MSUB managed to hold a 17-12 edge in shots while holding a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Bauman led the way with four shots for the Wolves as Jaucelyn Richter led all players in the match with five shots to lead MSUB.
The Wolves will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 11, when they travel to Burnaby, B.C., to face Simon Fraser in a conference contest at 7:30 p.m.
