BILLINGS, Mont. – Samantha Ward had a double-double with 18 kills and 11 digs while the Western Oregon volleyball team held Montana State Billings to a .143 hitting percentage as the Wolves picked up their sixth straight win, sweeping the Yellowjackets 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 30-28) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match on Thursday night. With the victory, WOU improved to 17-5 overall, 10-3 in league play, while the Yellowjackets fell to 9-12 overall, 6-7 in conference action.
After leading throughout and claiming the first set, the Wolves would use rallies in the second and third sets to pick up the season sweep over MSUB. Trailing 22-19 in the second set, WOU managed to go on a 4-1 run to knot the score at 23-23. Ward followed with a kill and the WOU defense forced an attack error on set point to grab a commanding two-set advantage.
It would be more of the same in the third set as WOU would fight off a pair of set points before picking up the straight-set victory.
Hannah Deede fought off one set point with a kill to tie the score at 25-25 and a service error by MSUB at 27-26 knotted the set as the Wolves would manage to win three of the next four points to finish off the match. With the set at 28-28, the WOU defense forced an attack error and
Danielle Reese put the final touches on the victory as her kill gave the Wolves a 30-28 third-set win.
A strong defensive performance propelled the Wolves as three WOU players ended the match with double digit digs as
Megan Triggs led the way with 17 as Reese added 11 digs in the victory.
Krissi Kemper continued her torrid play as she had nine kills while hitting .600 for the match and finished with second on the team with 10.5 points. Ward led all scorers with 18.5 points while
LesLyne Satele aided the performance with 17 assists.
Monica Grimsrud led MSUB with 20 kills and Taylor Adams had 11 kills for the Yellowjackets.
WOU will look to make it seven straight victories as the Wolves travel to Seattle, Wash., to face Seattle Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 2:00 p.m.
