Men's Hoops hosts Phoenix Inn Shootout this week

Wolves face Notre Dame de Namur on Friday before meeting with Emporia State on Saturday.

MONMOUTH, Ore.  – The Western Oregon men's basketball team returns to action this week as the Wolves host the WOU/Phoenix Inn D2 Shootout, beginning on Friday, Nov. 16, at the New PE Building. The Wolves open play on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against Notre Dame de Namur and close out the week against Emporia State on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m.

WOU enters the week with a record of 0-2 on the season after opening the season with close losses to Hawai'i Hilo and Chaminade. The Wolves fell to the Vulcans, 89-80, before falling to the Silverswords, 84-76.

Andy Avgi led the Wolves in the losses, averaging 20.5 points and 6.5 rebounds over the two contests. Rodney Webster added 12.5 points per game while James Gehring averaged 10.5 points per contest. WOU averaged 78.0 points while shooting 46.9 percent from the floor last week; however, opponents took 85 free throws compared to just 27 for the Wolves.

Notre Dame de Namur enters the week with a mark of 0-1 on the season after falling to Cal State East Bay last week. Micah Dunhour led NDNU in the loss with 20 points while Simon Enciso and Wesley White each added 13.

Emporia State enters the weekend with a mark of 1-0 as the Hornets defeated Missouri S&T, 66-56, on the road to open the season. Kaleb Wright led the way with 22 points while Tre Boutilier added 15 in the victory.

The Wolves lead the all-time series with NDNU, 4-0, after the Wolves captured a 77-60 victory last season. The meeting with ESU will mark the first time the two schools have met.

In other games at the invitational, Saint Martin's will face Emporia State at 5:15 p.m. on Friday while the Saints will face NDNU at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Tickets to the contests are $6 for adults and $4 for non-WOU students and seniors. WOU students are admitted for free with a valid school identification card.

Following the weekend action, the Wolves will travel up the road to Salem, Ore., to compete in the Capital City Classic. The Wolves will face Carroll College to open the tournament hosted by Corban College on Friday, Nov. 23, at 5:00 p.m.
