MONMOUTH, Ore. – Winners of four straight, the Western Oregon men's basketball team returns to action this week as the Wolves open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play when they host Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 7:00 p.m. before closing out the week against Central Washington on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7:00 p.m.
The Wolves enter conference play with a mark of 4-2 on the season after capturing the Capital City Classic title last week. WOU defeated Carroll in overtime before claiming the tournament championship with a victory over Corban.
Andy Avgi leads the WOU attack as the freshman forward is averaging 19.0 points per game while hauling in 6.7 boards per contest. At the Capital City Classic, Avgi averaged 26.0 points per game while earning tournament most valuable player honors and is shooting 71.0 percent from the floor this season.
Rodney Webster (12.2 points per game) and
Jordan Wiley (10.8 points per game) are also in double figures for the Wolves as WOU is averaging 73.3 points per game while shooting 44.0 percent from the floor.
Defensively, WOU is holding opponents to 68.7 points per game and just 40.9 percent from the floor. The Wolves defense has done a particularly good job defending the three-point line as opponents are shooting just 26.9 percent from behind the arc.
Northwest Nazarene enters the week with a mark of 3-2 on the season after defeating Academy of Art last week. The Crusaders, picked to finish seventh in the preseason GNAC poll, are led by Kenny Jones, who leads three players in double figures at 13.3 points per game. NNU is averaging 71.8 points per game while holding opponents to 42.6 percent from the field and 69.4 points per game.
Central Washington, picked to finish third in the conference, enter the week with a mark of 4-1 on the season after the Wildcats defeated Walla Walla last week. Mark McLaughlin is averaging an astounding 25.0 points per game as four Wildcats average in double figures. CWU leads the league in scoring at 94.2 points per game while opponents are scoring at a 85.4 point per game clip.
Last season, the Wolves swept a pair of games from NNU while splitting two games against the Wildcats.
Admission to the contests is $6 for adults and $ for non-WOU students and seniors. Current WOU students are admitted for free with a valid identification card.
Following this week's action, the Wolves will return to the court on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they travel to Logan, Utah, to face Utah State at 6:05 p.m.
