Wolves take doubleheader from CWU to win series

SELAH, Wash. - Myranda Sawyer and Hannah Pomeroy each threw complete games to lead Western Oregon to a doubleheader sweep and series win over Central Washington on Sunday, Feb. 26. The Wolves won the opener 7-4 in 10 innings behind Sawyer and game two 8-4 behind Pomeroy.

Game 1
Sawyer (2-2) went all 10 innings allowing just four hits and four runs (one earned) to lead the Wolves to the 7-4 win.

With the game tied at 3-3 entering the top of the 10th innings, WOU placed Andrea Bailey on second base to begin the inning. After a bunt single by Lexi Orteza and an intentional walk to Amanda Evola loaded the bases, Jourdan Williams singled to right center field and on the play CWU's right field misplayed the ball allowing all three runners to cross the plate. Williams would come home on an RBI groundout by Danielle Harcourt to give WOU the 7-3 lead.

Western Oregon overcame a three-run deficit earlier in the game to push the game to extra innings. Central Washington jumped to a 3-0 lead after the second inning but WOU then begin to chip away at the lead. The Wolves got their first run in the sixth inning on an error to bring the score to 3-1.

Danyelle Hutchison then chose an opportune moment for her first career home run. With WOU trailing by two in the top of the seventh, Ashlie Gardner singled to lead off the inning then Hutchison deposited the second pitch she saw over the right center field fence to knot the game at 3-3 and send it to extra innings.

Williams led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Hutchison also added two RBI and Evola crossed the plate twice. Western Oregon outhit Central Washington 7-4 in the contest.

Game 2
Pomeroy (2-1) gave up six hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out five, and the top three batters in the order combined to go 6-for-12 with four runs scored and seven runs batted to lead WOU to the 8-4 win.

Western Oregon never trailed in the game as they scored two runs in the second on a home run by Andrea Bailey to take the early lead. After CWU tied the game in the bottom of the third, the Wolves answered back with an RBI single by Desiree Villegas and a sacrifice fly by Amanda Evola to retake the lead at 4-2. WOU would tack on four more in the seventh to earn their third straight win.

Bailey finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, two RBI and three runs scored. Villegas knocked in a team-high three RBI as she went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Kendra George added two hits in three at-bats and also crossed the plate three times. WOU once again outhit the Wildcats with 13 base knocks compared to just six for CWU.

Next games
Western Oregon will now head back to Monmouth for its first home series of the year as its hosts Northwest Nazarene, Mar. 2-3.
