NAMPA, Idaho - Today it was the Western Oregon offense that picked up their pitchers as the Wolves put 20 runs on the board in the doubleheader against Northwest Nazarene on Wednesday (Apr. 11) en route to taking game one 15-4 and game two 5-4.
These were the fourth straight wins for the Wolves who improved to 8-12 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Ashley Worthey helped lead the Wolves' offense by going 5-for-6 with two triples, four runs scored and five runs driven in.
Game 1
Western Oregon scored in all four innings to run-rule Northwest Nazarene 15-4 in the opening game of the doubleheader.
The Wolves, who were listed as the home team because this was a make-up game, spotted NNU four runs in the top of the first but quickly took back the lead. After halving the Crusaders' lead on an
Amanda Evola RBI-triple and a
Jourdan Williams sacrifice fly in the first inning, WOU put up eight runs in the second to take control of the game. Parkerson and Worthey both had a two-run single in the inning as the Wolves batted around.
They added four more runs in the third on a two-run triple by Worthey and a two-run homer by
Danielle Harcourt.
Andrea Bailey came thru with a solo shot in the fourth inning to give Western Oregon runs in each inning.
Worthey finished the game 3-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and four RBI.
Amanda Evola scored three runs for the Wolves, while
Desiree Villegas, Bailey and Parkerson each added two hits. Bailey and Harcourt provided the only long balls of the game.
Hannah Pomeroy picked up the win in relief. She pitched the final two innings allowing just one hit for her third win of the season.
Game 2
The Wolves capitalized on a pair of costly errors by Northwest Nazarene to score four unearned runs and take game two 5-4.
Western Oregon found itself trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the third when they put up its first of two innings with two runs scored. The third inning rally started with two outs after NNU was unable to handle a grounder by
Jourdan Williams cleanly. With Williams standing on first base, Worthey made the Crusaders pay for their mistake by tripling down the left field line to plate Williams. Worthey would also come into score in the inning on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3.
The score would remain that way till the bottom of the fifth when once again the Wolves mounted a two-out rally. This time it was Worthey which reached on a throwing error by the shortstop which allowed a hustling
Amanda Evola to come all the way around from first base and score on the error.
Danielle Harcourt made the error sting even more as she doubled in Worthey from second to put WOU in front 5-3.
The score would remain that way into the top of the seventh when NNU mounted a rally. With one out, the Crusaders got a single and then Cara Duckworth doubled her in to cut the Wolves' lead to one (5-4). With Duckworth standing on third, after advancing on the throw, and one out WOU's pitcher
Myranda Sawyer got two infield grounders to seal the game.
Sawyer (5-5) went the distance in the contest allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out seven.
