BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Oregon softball team's final road trip of the year got off to a strong start as they went into Western Washington and swept a doubleheader from the Vikings, 2-0 and 3-2, on Wednesday, Apr. 25.
The wins push the Wolves' Great Northwest Athletic Conference record two games above .500 for the first time this season (21-24, 17-15 GNAC). The losses drop WU to 16-33 overall and to 12-20 in the GNAC.
Danielle Harcourt led the offense today by collecting four hits over the two games. Meanwhile the Wolves' starting pitchers,
Myranda Sawyer and
Hannah Pomeroy, combined to hold WWU to just two runs on nine hits over 14 innings of work.
Game 1
Myranda Sawyer posted her second career shutout and Western Oregon pushed two runs across in the bottom of the sixth inning to win game one 2-0.
Sawyer (8-5) held the Vikings to just two hits while striking out five and walking three over seven scoreless innings.
With the game knotted at 0-0 in the bottom of the sixth,
Kendra George led off the inning with a single then came home to score on an error by the Vikings' first baseman following a single by Harcourt. Harcourt would score WOU's second run of the inning on a two-out RBI double by
Jourdan Williams.
As this was a makeup game that was scheduled to be in Monmouth earlier this season, Western Oregon was listed as the home team.
Game 2
Ashlie Gardner's solo home run in the bottom of the fifth broke a 2-2 tie and lifted Western Oregon to a 3-2 victory and a doubleheader sweep.
Gardner, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the third inning, took the second pitch she saw in the at-bat over the left center field wall for her second home run of the season.
Hannah Pomeroy (7-9) would take advantage of her first lead of the day by setting down six of the next seven batters to earn her fifth win in the month of April. Pomeroy would pitch a complete game allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out seven.
Ashley Worthey and
Danielle Harcourt both collected two hits and were the only players on either team to record a multi-hit game. George and
Amanda Evola each tacked on an RBI.
Next games
Western Oregon will now travel into Canada to face Simon Fraser in a doubleheader on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
