MONMOUTH, Ore. - Four Western Oregon student-athletes were honored at the Student Leadership Awards on Tuesday, May 8.

Bobby Alexander, of the Western Oregon track & field team, received one of the most distinguished awards on campus when he was honored with the Delmer Dwey Award. The Delmer Dewey Award, presented each year to the outstanding male student, is named for former Dean of Men Delmer Dewey, who died in 1953. The award was first presented in 1954. As part of winning the award, Alexander will now speak at commencement on June 16th.

"This is not an athletic award, but an award that represents a quality student that others respect and who impacts their community," said Western Oregon head track & field coach Mike Johnson. "Those are the values that we cherish and we are very proud of all that Bobby has accomplished this year."

Sylvia Herrold, a former volleyball student-athlete and current assistant coach, was given the Distinguished Student Leader award. This annual award is given to a student who has shown exemplarily leadership on campus. The individual(s) should have a variety of experiences that show progress in responsibility and commitment. The student should have maintained a good academic standing while contributing to the co-curricular programs of Western.

"Sylvia is very deserving (of this award) for all her leadership," explained Western Oregon head volleyball coach Brad Saindon. "Her volleyball career sadly came to an end but it didn't slow her down in her pursuit of life goals or as a leader. It was great to see the University recognize her for her leadership."

The Wolves also handed out a pair of awards for Outstanding Student Leadership in Athletics. Kirk Lind earned the honor on the men's side, while Lexi Pola received the award for the women. Lind is four-year letterwinner as a starter on the baseball team. Pola is a third year sprinter for the Wolves' track & field team.
