MONMOUTH, Ore. - It didn't take Western Oregon long to get into the scoring column this year as
Kymberly Witmer scored a goal 47 seconds into the match and the Wolves did not look back en route to a 3-0 win over Oregon Tech on Friday, Aug. 31.
Witmer finished off a crisp opening possession of the season for the Wolves with a rocket shot over the goalie into the top left of the net. Newcomer
Melissa Gonzalez notched the assist on the goal by finding Witmer wide open on the top right side of the box for the score.
The newcomers would continue to make their presence felt during their first collegiate match as Wolves. Freshman
Maya Palaroan recorded the second goal of the match in the 66th minute following a rebound and an assist from fellow freshman
Makana Pundyke. Pundyke would also assist on the Wolves' third goal just one minute later. She found
Macy Bothman open in front of the net after a scrum for Bothman's first career goal.
"We were excited to get out there and play our first match (of the season) today," said Western Oregon head coach
Steve Ancheta. "We showed those first game nerves in the first half but in the second half we settled in and played way better."
The Wolves kept the pressure on OIT throughout the contest by outshooting the Owls 26-6, including 10-1 in the opening period. WOU also beat OIT in corner kicks 6-0.
"We were happy to get the win and see some good performances from the players," Ancheta continued. "We are excited for the class we brought in and we think they will help us throughout the year. They are helping us build our depth which is even more important come GNAC play."
The Wolves will have only one more week of matches before entering GNAC play. Next week they will head to Hawaii to take on three teams on the island. They will open with Hawaii Hilo on Sept. 3, then face Chaminade on Sept. 4 before closing out with BYU-Hawaii on Sept. 6.
