MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon women's soccer team used three first-half goals to power past Simon Fraser, 4-1, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday morning. With the victory, WOU improved to 3-3 on the season, 1-1 in conference play, while the Clan fell to 1-4 overall, 0-2 in conference action.
“I was really pleased with the way we came out and responded after a tough loss to Western Washington,” head coach
Steve Ancheta said. “We were aggressive from the start and did a great job of finishing our opportunities. It was a great win for the team and an overall great effort.”
Western Oregon got on the board in the 20th minute as
Marina Austin found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The senior had her original shot blocked by the Simon Fraser goalkeeper; however, managed to collect the rebound and fire it into the top right-hand corner of the net to give the Wolves the lead.
WOU quickly extended the lead as
JoEllen DeLeon gave the Wolves a two-goal advantage just three minutes later. In the 22nd minute,
Lindsay Bauman crossed the ball into the box and over to DeLeon who calmly fired the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the year.
Nikki Caudill would make it a three-goal advantage for WOU heading into halftime as her unassisted goal in the 32nd minute would give the Wolves a comfortable edge at the break.
After halftime,
Maya Palaroan made the score 4-0 as her header in the 70th minute finished the scoring for the Wolves. On the goal,
Nikki Caudill dribbled down the left side of the field and fired a cross into the box. Palaroan ran under the ball and headed it past the keeper and into the net for her second goal of the season.
Simon Fraser managed to get on the board in the 85th minute as Olivia Aguiar prevented the Wolves from posting a clean sheet.
In the match, WOU held a decided 19-4 edge in shots while holding a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Hillary Lutz picked up the win for the Wolves and posted one saves while Amanda Gilliland made two stops in the loss.
Kelsey Lindsey also recorded a save for the Wolves in the victory.
Western Oregon will look to make it two wins in a row as the Wolves return to action on Thursday, Sept. 20 as the Wolves travel to Nampa, Idaho, to face Northwest Nazarene at 3:00 p.m.
