MONMOUTH, Ore. – Marina Austin's goal in the seventh minute proved to be the difference as the Western Oregon women's soccer team claimed a 1-0 win over Central Washington in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday. With the victory, WOU improved to 4-5-1 overall, 2-3-1 in league play, while the Wildcats fell to 3-5-2 overall, 2-3-1 in conference action.
“We showed a lot of guts today after playing such a tough match on Thursday,” head coach
Steve Ancheta said. “I loved our total effort for 90 minutes and it always feels good to get a win over a quality opponent.”
The Wolves managed to get on the board quickly as WOU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Austin's second goal of the season. After a CWU foul, Rebecca Hoiland delivered the ensuing free-kick into the box as Austin headed the ball into the back of the net to give the Wolves a lead they would not relinquish.
With the score 1-0 at the half, CWU's best chance to score came in the 54th minute after a Wildcat player was fouled just outside the box. Tarah Duty's free kick; however, glanced off the crossbar as the Wolves held onto the one-goal lead.
The WOU defense did the rest of the work as the Wolves limited the Wildcats to just one shot on goal en route to a shutout victory.
WOU managed to control play throughout as the Wolves held a decided, 16-4, edge in shots and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
Austin led all players with five shots as Taylor Stanley had two shots for the Wildcats in a losing effort.
Hillary Lutz made one save in goal to pick up the shutout victory as Kayla Lipston made five stops for the Wildcats in the loss.
The Wolves will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 4, as WOU hosts Saint Martin's at 3:30 p.m.
