MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon men's basketball team returns to action this week as the Wolves host defending national champion and No. 3 Western Washington on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7:00 p.m. before a meeting with Simon Fraser on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m.
Western Oregon enters the week with a mark of 7-6 overall and 2-3 in league play after the Wolves fell to Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Fairbanks last week. WOU is scoring at a 75.1 points per game clip as the Wolves are led by freshman
Andy Avgi, who leads the team at 17.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
Avgi leads three WOU players in double figures as
Devon Alexander is averaging 10.9 points per game while
Rodney Webster is scoring 10.5 points per contest for the Wolves. WOU is currently shooting 44.0 percent from the field as Avgi leads the team and ranks second in the conference, hitting 62.3 percent of his shots.
Western Washington enters the week undefeated with a perfect 14-0 mark after wins over Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene last week. The Vikings are 5-0 in league play and are outscoring opponents by 20.3 points per game. John Allen leads four WWU players in double figures at 16.9 points per game as the Vikings are holding opponents to just 41.5 percent from the field.
Losers of seven straight contests, Simon Fraser enters this week with a mark of 5-8 on the season, 0-5 in GNAC play, after losses to the Crusaders and Wildcats last week. The Clan are averaging 81.0 points per contest and have five players averaging in double figures. Elijah Matthews ranks second on the squad at 14.2 points per game while Taylor Dunn is scoring 13.8 points per contest.
Last season, WOU swept the Clan while splitting a pair of contests against the Vikings.
Admission to the key conference contests are $6 for adults, $4 for non-WOU students and seniors and are free to current WOU students with a valid identification card.
Following this week's contests, WOU will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 24, when the Wolves travel to Seattle, Wash., to take on Seattle Pacific at 7:00 p.m.
