ARCATA, Calif. – The Western Oregon University football team closed its season with a 26-14 road win at Humboldt State University Saturday.
On a rainy afternoon, the Wolves (7-4, 7-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) held HSU to 204 yards of offense, with just 10 coming on the ground. Through the air, the WOU defense came away with three interceptions. The Wolves also finished with six sacks.
Western Oregon had 98 plays of offense, while the Lumberjacks had 64. The Wolves jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never trailed.
James DePew ran for 108 yards on 20 carries. The sophomore found the endzone once on the ground and once with a catch.
Ryan Bergman completed 29 of his 48 passes for 336 yards. The junior threw a touchdown and an interception.
Antoinne Wafer finished his collegiate career with a game-high 109 receiving yards on nine catches.
A one-yard score from Will Kanongataa completed a 15-play, 87-yard drive on the Wolves' first possession.
Jesse Correa then hit a 42-yard field goal to give WOU a 10-0 lead in the second quarter. DePew finished Western Oregon's first half scoring with a three-yard catch from Bergman. HSU got on the scoreboard with a 20-yard touchdown reception with just two seconds left in the half.
Correa opened the second half scoring with a 39-yard field goal. It was the lone points scored in the third quarter. The Lumberjacks connected on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 11:39 remaining in the fourth, before DePew punched in a six-yard score with 7:14 left to end the scoring.
Casey Mintz finished 12-of-32 for the Lumberjacks (0-11, 0-10 GNAC). The sophomore had 133 passing yards, with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Chase Krivashei and Kelechi Nwadibia both had 70 yards receiving.
Shane Kuenzi led the Wolves with seven tackles with a sack. Two and a half of
Kraig Akins' six tackles were sacks. Devin Chappel had two interceptions and five tackles.
Roger Garrett came away with the other interception.
Gustave Benthin had 1.5 sacks. HSU's Ryan Moreno led all players with 11 tackles. Cameron Buell had 10 tackles.
Saturday was the 37th matchup between Humboldt State and WOU all-time. The Wolves now hold a 22-15 advantage in a series that dates back to a 31-0 Oregon Normal victory in Arcata in 1929. Western Oregon has won four straight in the series. The Wolves have won 13 of the 18 matches against HSU under Ferguson. Since 2000, Western Oregon is 7-5 in Arcata against the Lumberjacks.
