GLENDORA, Calif. -- The Western Oregon University men's basketball team dropped a 71-59 decision to Cal State-Dominguez Hills in the third game of the Cougar Classic hosted by Azusa Pacific University Saturday.
The Toros (3-2) made 48 percent of their shots from the field, and held Western Oregon to 36 percent. CSUDH outrebounded the Wolves, 40-27. Dominguez Hills was 6-of-18 from behind-the-arc and 13-for-16 from the free throw line. WOU made five of its 18 three-pointers, and all 12 of its 12 free throws.
Givon Crump led all scorers with 25 points for the Toros. He was 6-of-13 from the field and 11-of-13 from the free throw line. Darnell Martin and Everett Turner both scored 14 points, while Martin added 11 rebounds for the double-double. Chris Carvin and Steffon Neal both dished out four assists. Carvin had three steals.
Cal State Dominguez Hills used a 9-0 run to turn an 11-9 deficit into an 18-11 lead. The Toros led 28-25 at halftime. CSUDH pushed its lead to 11 after the break on a Carvin three-pointer with 17:52 left in regulation, and held off a WOU run that cut its lead to just 39-35 with 11:42 left. The Toros put the game away with an 18-4 run.
Rodney Webster led Western Oregon (2-2) with 18 points. He made six of his 13 shots from the field.
Devon Alexander scored 13 points and
Marwan Sarhan added 11.
Adam Hastings and Sarhan both grabbed five rebounds.
Jordan Wiley had three of the Wolves' four assists. Alexander made three steals.
The Wolves welcome Dixie State (3-0) in their home opener next Saturday. DSC upset No. 2 Seattle Pacific on the road Saturday, 90-88, in overtime. The Red Storm also opened the season with an exhibition win at NCAA Div. I UNLV. Tipoff between Western Oregon and Dixie State is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live video and stats will be available on WOUWolves.com.
