MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University women's soccer team secured a point for its seniors with a scoreless draw against Saint Martin's University (Wash.) on Senior Day Saturday.
The Wolves (9-3-6, 7-3-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) capped off their regular season with the tie. During the match, the official seeds for the GNAC Championships were set, and entering the game WOU knew it would be the fourth seed in next week's postseason event.
Western Oregon's offense struggled in the cold and rainy match. The Wolves had a 15-13 advantage in shots, but SMU placed six shots on goal to Western Oregon's five. The WOU defense secured its 12th shutout of the season, building on its program record.
It was not an easy for the Wolves. Saint Martin's had a few opportunities late in regulation for the winning score. The Saints' Hanna Massee missed a penalty kick just wide of the net in the 80th minute. Earlier in the half a Kelli Bannerman shot struck the post before going out. Western Oregon also had an attempt strike the crossbar late.
Gina Cardenas recorded five saves for the Saints (4-12-1, 3-10-1 GNAC).
Hillary Lutz blocked four shots for WOU, and
Kelsey Lindsey had a pair of saves in the first half.
The Wolves will finish the season with only one loss at home. WOU outscored opponents 13-1 in Monmouth this year.
Western Oregon now meets No. 11 Western Washington (15-1-0, 12-1-0) in the conference semifinals Thursday at 7 p.m. The Vikings are ranked second in the West Region, and have won three games since their lone loss at WOU. The Wolves handed then-ranked No. 2 in the nation Western Washington a 1-0 road setback.
