HONOLULU, Hawaii – Christophe Varidel's debut for Chaminade University men's basketball was impressive Friday. The transfer from NCAA Div. I Florida Gulf Coast scored a game-high 30 points in the Silverswords' 82-73 win over Western Oregon University. The second game of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference/PacWest Conference Challenge was a regular season-opener for both teams.

Varidel, who was a key component off the bench during FGCU's surprising run in the NCAA Div. I Tournament last year, made eight of his 18 shots from the field Friday. The senior made five of his 12 attempts from behind-the-arc and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. He also led Chaminade with seven rebounds.

Three other Silversword players finished in double figures. AJ Mathew scored 13, James Harper had 11, and Rhys Murphy added 10. Murphy dished out a game-high five assists.

Chaminade (1-0) shot 44 percent from the field, including 50 percent in the first half. The Silverswords made 13 of their 29 three-point attempts and 17-of-23 from the free-throw line. Chaminade had a 48-37 rebound advantage.

The Wolves never had the lead in the game, and tied the score once at 11 at the 16:27 mark of the first half. Chaminade responded with a 12-2 run and controlled the tempo from there. The Silverswords led by as many as 11 in the first half, and by six at halftime. Chaminade's largest lead in the second half was 77-67.

Western Oregon (0-1) was 41 percent from the field. The Wolves were 6-for-19 from behind-the-perimeter and 15-of-24 from the free-throw line. WOU forced the Silverswords into 15 turnovers, while committing 12. Western Oregon finished with seven blocks. The Wolves had a 25-12 edge in second chance points.

The Wolves were paced by Devon Alexander's 18 points. Rodney Webster added 12, while Jordan Wiley and Adam Hastings combined for 21 points. Hastings came off the bench and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Lewis Thomas had three of WOU's seven blocks.

Western Oregon faces Hawaii-Hilo Saturday in third game of the challenge. The Vulcans (1-0) opened their season with a 75-65 win over GNAC member Saint Martin's in the first game Friday. The WOU and Hawaii-Hilo game tips off at 5 p.m.
