Box Score 2 LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Western Oregon softball team split a pair of contests at the Desert Stinger Invitational on Saturday, falling to Sonoma State, 5-2, before earning a 4-2 victory over UC Colorado Springs. With the split, WOU improves to 2-6 on the season.
In the game one loss to Sonoma State, the Seawolves jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as the Wolves were unable to rally.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, WOU got on the board as
Desiree Villegas singled through the right side of the infield, scoring
Danielle Harcourt to cut the lead to 3-1.
Sonoma State had an answer; however, as the Seawolves scored a pair of runs in the seventh to take a 5-1 lead. The Wolves would manage a run in the bottom of the inning on
Hannah Pomeroy's first home run of the season; but, it would not be enough as the Wolves fell, 5-2.
Samantha Lipperd picked up the win for SSU as she moved to 3-2 on the season after allowing two runs while striking out 13 in seven innings of work.
Pomeroy took the loss for WOU after allowing five runs as she fell to 1-2 on the season.
WOU managed to rebound in game two as the Wolves jumped out to an early lead and hung on for a 4-2 win over UC Colorado Springs.
The Wolves got on the board early as
Jourdan Williams' two-out infield single scored
Lexi Orteza from third to give WOU a 1-0 lead.
WOU would extend the lead to three with a pair of runs in the fourth inning.
Bridjet Box singled to score Pomeroy and Williams scored on a Mountain Lions error with two outs as the Wolves would carry a 3-0 lead into the fifth inning.
Pomeroy would give the Wolves an insurance run in the fifth as her single scored
Amanda Evola to give WOU a comfortable 4-0 lead.
The Mountain Lions would attempt to mount a rally in the sixth with a pair of runs; however, Pomeroy came into the game in relief of WOU starter
Stephanie Morgan and shut UCCS down to earn her first save of the season.
Morgan picked up the victory for WOU, allowing two unearned runs in 5.1 innings of work.
Jessica Belsterling took the loss for UC Colorado Springs, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings of work.
Evola led the WOU offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.
WOU will look to finish the Desert Stringer Invitational on a high note when the Wolves face Chadron State on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 2:00 p.m.
