KANEOHE, Hawai'i – The Western Oregon softball team earned a split against Hawai'i Pacific as the Wolves opened their eight-game road trip with an 8-5 victory in game one, before falling in game two to the Sea Warriors, 7-3, on Tuesday. With the split, WOU moves to 4-7 on the season while HPU is now 6-2 overall.
In game one, WOU scored eight unanswered runs after falling behind 3-0 early as the Wolves would hold on for an 8-5 victory over the Sea Warriors.
Danielle Harcourt led WOU in the win with three RBI while
Amanda Evola went 2-for-4 with a home run, double and two runs scored as the Wolves opened an eight-game road trip with a win.
After HPU put three runs in the board in the bottom of the first inning, WOU tied the score with a run in the second and two in the third. Harcourt put the Wolves on the board as her sacrifice fly in the second inning scored
Jourdan Williams from third to cut the lead to 3-1. After
Lexi Orteza scored on a triple and a throwing error, Williams would tie the game as her double to centerfield scored
Hannah Pomeroy to make it 3-3.
Following a scoreless fourth, WOU would explode for four runs in the fifth inning to grab control of the game. Evola would score on a Williams' fielder choice to give the Wolves the lead as Harcourt doubled down the left field line, scoring Desiree Viillegas and
Ashlie Gardner to give WOU a 7-4 lead. Harcourt capped the four-run outburst when she scored on a throwing error as the Wolves would take an 8-4 lead heading into the sixth.
Evola would put the finishing touched on the Wolves' eight-run rally as she blasted a home run to center to lead off the sixth inning to give WOU a five-run lead heading into the final inning.
After HPU scored a pair of runs to cut the lead to 8-5, the Sea Warriors would bring the winning run to the plate with two outs. WOU starter Pomeroy managed to put an end to the late rally as she struck out Celina Garces to end the game to give the Wolves the game one victory.
Pomeroy picked up the complete game victory for WOU as she moved to 2-2 on the season after allowing three earned runs while scattering 13 hits and striking out three in seven innings.
Alysia Maddison took the loss for HPU after allowing four runs on six hits in four innings of work as she fell to 1-1 on the season.
Game two saw WOU grab the early lead before HPU managed to rally for a 7-3 victory.
Ashlie Gardner went 3-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Wolves while
Bridjet Box added two hits, a run and a RBI in a losing effort.
WOU grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second off RBI singles from Box and
Melanie Pfeiffer as HPU responded with a pair of runs in the third to tie the score.
After Box scored to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead in the fourth, HPU scored five straight runs to grab a decided, 7-3 advantage heading into the final inning. Keila Elderts had the key hit in the rally, as her two-run triple in the sixth inning put the game away.
Stephanie Morgan took the loss for WOU, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in five innings of work to fall to 1-2 on the season.
Melissa Kirby earned the win for the Sea Warriors as she improved to 2-0 on the year after allowing three runs on eight hits in seven innings of work.
WOU will continue on the Hawai'i road trip when the Wolves travel to Hilo, Hawai'i to open play at the Hawai'i Hilo Round Robin against Missouri Western State on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 12:00 p.m.
