HILO, Hawaii – For the second straight day, the Western Oregon softball team split a pair of games at the Hawaii Hilo Round Robin as the Wolves fell to Missouri Western State, 2-1, before rebounding for an 8-0, six-inning victory over Hawaii Hilo in game two. With the split, WOU improved to 6-9 on the season.
After losing a pitcher's duel against the Griffons in game one, the Wolves rode the arm of
Stephanie Morgan as the freshman picked up her first career shutout victory, holding the Vulcans to just three hits in six innings of work inthe complete game win. Morgan struck out three as she improved to 2-3 on the season.
WOU would score all the runs it would need with a pair of runs in the first inning.
Hannah Pomeroy singled up the middle to score Michelle Pfeiffer and
Lexi Orteza as the Wolves grabbed the early 2-0 lead.
The Wolves would then explode for five runs in the second to blow the game open. After
Danielle Hannan and
Bridjet Box scored on a throwing error,
Danielle Harcourt would blow the game open as she delivered a three-run home run, her first of the season, to give the Wolves a 7-0 lead.
As Morgan kept the UHH in check,
Jourdan Williams would end the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as her single to right scored Hannan to give the Wolves an 8-0, run-rule victory.
Eight WOU players would record hits in the victory as Box led the way, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Vanessa Salinas took the loss for UHH as she allowed seven runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of work.
In the game one loss, Breanna Fleschner delivered a home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Griffins a 2-1, walk-off win.
The Wolves jumped on the board first in the pitcher's duel as Orteza singled up the middle to score Hannan for a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
It would be one of only two hits for the Wolves in the contest as the Griffons would tie the game on Tiffany Gillaspy's RBI double in the fifth.
Janie Smith picked up the complete game, shutout win for the Griffons as she allowed one run on two hits in seven innings of work.
Williams was the tough-luck loser for WOU as she allowed only two runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
WOU will conclude action at the UHH Round Robin when the Wolves face the Griffons on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2:15 p.m. before a meeting with UHH at 4:30 p.m.
