MONMOUTH, Ore. – After trailing by as many as 13 points, the WOU men's basketball team rallied to within one possession of No. 5 Seattle Pacific; however, the Wolves would eventually fall to the Falcons, 82-76, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest on Saturday. With the loss, WOU falls to 10-14 on the season, 5-11 in league play, while the Falcons improve to 21-3 overall, 14-2 in conference action.
After trailing by 10 at the half, WOU would chip away at the Falcons lead throughout the final 20 minutes as the Wolves climbed to within two points at 74-72 with 3:52 remaining on a free throw by senior
Kolton Nelson. The Falcons responded by closing the contest on an 8-4 run as the Wolves were unable to pull off the upset.
Andy Avgi and
Devon Alexander each had 17 points to lead the Wolves while Nelson added 15 points in a losing effort. The Wolves used the three-pointer to pull back into the game as WOU shot 5-of-8 from behind the arc in the second half and 8-of-15 from three for the contest (53.3 percent).
As a team, WOU shot 23-of-47 from the floor (48.9 percent) and 22-of-27 from the line (81.5 percent).
Seattle Pacific used a 34-27 edge on the glass to outscore the Wolves in second chance points, 12-4, as the Falcons also had the edge in points off of turnovers, 12-7.
Jobi Wall led four SPU players in double figures with 17 while Patrick Simon added 16 for the Falcons. SPU shot 46.6 percent from the floor for the game (27-of-58) while hitting 11-of-24 from behind the line.
The victory gave the Falcons the season sweep over the Wolves after SPU picked up an overtime win earlier this year in Seattle.
The contest marked the final home games for WOU seniors Nelson,
James Gehring and
Brandon Troxel. Gehring finished the night with two points while Troxel poured in five during his final home contest.
WOU will look to rebound from the loss when the Wolves return to action on Thursday, Feb. 28, when they travel to Ellensburg, Wash., to face Central Washington at 7:30 p.m.
