Softball picks up split on final day in Hawaii

Wolves cruise to a win over Missouri Western State before falling to Hawaii Hilo.

HILO, Hawaii – For the third consecutive day, the Western Oregon softball team split a pair of games at the Hawaii Hilo Round Robin as the Wolves defeated Missouri Western State in five innings, 10-1, before dropping the finale of the invitational to UHH, 12-0. With the split, WOU moved to 7-10 on the season.

After falling to the Griffons in each of the first two days of the invitational, WOU exploded for 10 unanswered runs on Saturday to cruise to the run-rule victory.

The Griffons got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning; however, Jourdan Williams quickly tied the score as she launched a home run to left-center in the top of the second.

It would be the first of 10 unanswered runs for the Wolves over the next four innings as Danielle Harcourt connected on a two-run blast, the second of the game for WOU and her second of the weekend, to give the Wolves a 4-1 lead in the third.

WOU would put the game away with four runs in the fourth as Amanda Evola and Williams each had RBI doubles while Harcourt delivered a RBI single to give the Wolves an 8-1 lead.

After a pair of runs in the firth, WOU starter Hannah Pomeroy would shut the Griffons down in the bottom of the inning as she picked up the complete game win and moved to 4-2 on the season after allowing one run on four hits while striking out six.

J. Smith took the loss for the Griffons, allowing four runs on five hits in three innings of work.

Williams and Harcourt each had three RBI to lead the Wolves while Evola added two hits and two runs scored.

In game two, Hawaii Hilo exploded for 19 hits as the Vulcans earned a 12-0, run-rule victory as the Wolves fell to UHH for the first time in three days.

WOU was unable to solve Vulcan starter Hannah Peterson as she allowed only five hits over six innings of work while holding the Wolves scoreless.

Rebecca Lee led the Vulcan attack as she went 4-for-5 with three runs and a RBI while Kristina Victa went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.

Lexi Orteza led the Wolves with a pair of hits while Williams took the loss after allowing seven runs in four innings of work.

WOU will return to action on Friday, March 1, when the Wolves travel to Salem, Ore., for a doubleheader with Corban at 1:00 p.m.
