MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon track and field team opens the 2013 outdoor season this weekend as the Wolves travel to compete in the Willamette Open on Saturday, March 2, in Salem, Ore. Field events at the season opener are slated for 9:30 a.m. with track events set to start at 11:45 a.m.
“This meet should be a great opportunity for some of our new athletes to get exposure to the quality of a collegiate meet,” head coach
Mike Johnson said. “We will be resting some of the athletes who raced extensively during the indoor season; but, we are excited because we will have a number of athletes competing for the first time this season.”
Among those competing for the first time this year is three-time All-American
Amanda Schumaker as she is scheduled to compete in the javelin. The senior begins her quest to become a four-time All-American selection after throwing a 158-05 to place third at the NCAA Championships last season.
Also on the women's side, junior
Madison McClung is scheduled to compete in the 100 and 200-meters. Last season, McClung moved to second in WOU history in the events with times of 12.05 and 24.80, respectively.
On the men's side,
Kody Rhodes is one of the highlights of the WOU entries as he is scheduled to compete in the 110-meter hurdles. Last season, Rhodes captured league title in the event by running a career-best time of 14.95 in the finals.
Following the first outdoor meet of the season, WOU will return to action on Saturday, March 9, when the Wolves travel to Eugene, Ore., for the Lane Preview.
