Men's Hoops hosts Alaska schools in key league games

MONMOUTH, Ore.- The Western Oregon men's basketball team returns to action this week as the Wolves resume conference play when they host Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m., and later when they host Alaska Anchorage on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 4:15 p.m.

WOU is looking to build off its victory last week as the Wolves defeated Saint Martin's and enter this week with an overall record of 9-9 and 4-6 in GNAC conference play. The Wolves enter the week just one game back of fourth-place in the conference standings as WOU looks to finish in the top six in the league and secure a berth inthe Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship.

Freshman forward Andy Avgi remains the Wolves leading scorer, averaging 15.7 points per game to rank sixth in the league. Avgi also leads WOU in rebounds with an average of 5.2 rpg. In addition to Avgi, other WOU players averaging in double figures include freshmen guards Devon Alexander and Rodney Webster, who both average 10.4 ppg. Junior guard Tyler Funk leads the Wolves with 2.9 assists per game as the Wolves average 75.2 ppg as a team.

On the defensive side of the ball, Alexander leads the team in steals (46), and senior center Kolton Nelson leads the team in blocked shots (10). As a team, the Wolves give up an average of 78.6 ppg.

Alaska Fairbanks enters the game with an overall record of 11-8 and a conference record of 6-5. They split their games last week at home with a victory over Northwest Nazarene and a loss to Central Washington.

Senior guard Dominique Brinson leads the Nanooks in scoring with an average of 13.2 ppg as the Nanooks average 73.3 ppg as a team. On the defensive end, junior center Sergej Pucar leads the team in rebounding with 7.6 rpg. Voeut leads the team in steals (29), and junior forward Andrew Kelly in blocked shots (17). The Nanooks give up an average of 68.1 ppg.

Alaska Anchorage enters the week with an overall record of 14-5 and a conference record of 7-4. The Seawolves are coming off home wins last week over Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene.

Junior guard Kyle Fossman leads the Seawolves in scoring with 15.8 ppg. Other players averaging double figures include sophomore guard Teancum Stafford (13.1 ppg) and senior forward/center Liam Gibcus (11.4 ppg). The Seawolves average 76.8 ppg as a team.

Earlier this season, WOU dropped road contests against the Nanooks and Seawolves.

The game against Alaska Anchorage marks the annual OCE/WOU Men's Basketball Alumni Night as a number of former Wolves student-athletes will be honored during the contest. In addition, fans who attend will have the opportunity to win a number of prizes, including a $400 voucher on Southwest Airlines.

Admission to each contest is $6 for adults and $4 for non-WOU students and seniors while current WOU students are admitted for free with a valid identification card.

Following this week, the Wolves return to action next week with road games against Simon Fraser on Feb. 14 and Western Washington on Feb. 16.
