LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Western Oregon softball team was unable to get in the win column on the first day of the Desert Stinger Invitational as the Wolves fell to Metro State in a wild contest, 12-11, before falling to Minot State, 6-0, to close out the first day of action. With the losses, WOU falls to 1-5 on the season.
In game one against Metro State, WOU jumped out to a 7-3 lead after two-and-a-half innings as the Wolves scored seven unanswered runs following a three-run home run by C. Brew in the first that gave MSU an early 3-0 lead.
Lexi Orteza started the seven-run rally with a two-run drive to center as
Desiree Villegas and
Jourdan Williams also had RBI in the outburst as the Wolves took a four-run lead into the bottom of the third inning.
MSU had an answer; however, as the Roadrunners scored nine runs over the next three innings to take a 12-10 lead heading into the sixth inning. WOU would manage to cut the two run deficit in half on a

Bridjet Box; however, the Wolves would not be able to push the tying run across as MSU came away with a 12-11 victory.
Villegas led the way for WOU, going 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI while
Melanie Pfeiffer,
Amanda Evola,
Ashlie Gardner, Orteza and Harcourt each had two hits for the Wolves. WOU managed 13 hits on the day while Metro State finished with 12.
Both teams managed to take advantage of defensive mistakes as WOU scored five unearned runs as Metro State took advantage of four WOU errors for five unearned runs.
Hannah Pomeroy took the loss for WOU and fell to 1-2 on the season, tossing a complete game while allowing seven earned runs.
B. Moss picked up the victory for MSU, allowing 12 hits and 11 runs over seven innings of work. D. Sandel led the Roadrunners on offense, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs scored.
In game two, T. Friesen tossed six innings of one-hit ball, striking out 12 WOU batters as Minot State claimed a 6-0 win over the Wolves.
J. Dixon led Minot State, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored as the Wolves were unable to get on the board against the MSU pitching.
Jourdan Williams took the loss for WOU, allowing three earned runs in five innings of work.
WOU will look to rebound from the day one setbacks when the Wolves return to action on Saturday, Feb. 9, with a game against Sonoma State at 2:00 p.m. before a meeting with Colorado-Colorado Springs at 7:00 p.m.
