Softball drops doubleheader at Corban on Friday

Wolves fall in game one, 8-0, before Corban rallies to an 8-6 victory in game two.

SALEM, Ore. – The Western Oregon softball team dropped a pair of games to Corban on Friday afternoon as the Wolves dropped a doubleheader to the Warriors, falling 8-0 in five innings in game one before dropping an 8-6 decision in game two. With the losses, WOU falls to 7-12 on the season while Corban improves to 10-2.

In the game one loss, the Wolves were unable to get anything going against Corban starter Amy Greenough. The Corban starter picked up the victory after scattering six hits in five innings of work to pick up the shutout.

The Wolves fell behind early in the contest as Corban followed a single run in the first with a five-spot in the second inning to grab a commanding, 6-0 lead. Stephanie Nippert and Erica Fitzgerald each had two-run singles in the second inning as Corban grabbed control from the start.

The Warriors managed a pair of runs in the fourth and held WOU scoreless in the fifth to pick up the run-rule victory. Amanda Evola led WOU in the loss as she went 2-for-3 in the contest.

Hannah Pomeroy took the loss and fell to 4-3 on the season after allowing eight runs on 10 hits in four innings of work.

Nippert led Corban in the game one victory, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and five RBI.

In game two, Corban rallied from a 3-1 deficit to claim an 8-6 win and sweep the doubleheader from the Wolves.

After Corban scored a single run in the first, WOU took the lead with three runs in the third. Jourdan Williams singled home Lexi Orteza to tie the game as Pomeroy gave the Wolves a two-run lead when her single scored Williams and Evola.

Corban responded; however, as the Warriors scored four in the fourth and three in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead. Courtney Castronovo had the key hit in the rally as her three-run home run in the fifth gave the Warriors a five-run lead heading into the final two innings.

WOU would mount a rally in the seventh, scoring three unearned runs; however, the Wolves would be unable to score the tying run as Jessica Slate recorded the final out in relief for the Warriors.

Stephanie Morgan took the loss for WOU and fell to 2-4 on the season after allowing seven earned runs in six innings of work.

Chelsea Schriber picked up the win for Corban after allowing three runs on 10 hits in six innings of work.

Evola, Pomeroy and Desiree Villegas each had two hits to lead WOU as the Wolves managed 11 hits in the contest.

WOU will return to action on Sunday, March 3, when the Wolves host Concordia in their home opener at 12:00 p.m.
