MONMOUTH, Ore. – Winners of eight-of-10, the Western Oregon softball team returns to action this week as the Wolves host a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheaders, hosting Simon Fraser on Saturday, March 23, at 1:00 p.m., before a meeting with Western Washington on Sunday, March 24, at 1:00 p.m.
The Wolves enter the week with a 15-14 record overall and stand in second-place in the GNAC standings with a 6-2 league mark after splitting four road contests last week. WOU swept a pair of games from Northwest Nazarene before the Wolves saw their eight-game win streak snapped at Central Washington, falling to the Wildcats in both games of a doubleheader.
WOU continues to be among the league leaders offensively as the Wolves rank third in the conference in hitting with a .283 team batting average while leading the league with 147 runs scored.
Desiree Villegas leads three WOU players hitting over .300 as the infielder ranks fifth in the league with a .385 average.
Jourdan Williams (.376) and
Amanda Evola (.367) are also batting over .300 for the Wolves.
Evola continues to lead the league in a number of offensive categories as the sophomore outfielder ranks first in runs scored (22), hits (33), doubles (11) and total bases (59). Meanwhile, Williams leads the league with 27 RBI while WOU's
Lexi Orteza is tied with Evola for the conference lead with 22 runs scored.
In the circle, WOU ranks fourth in the conference with a 4.10 team ERA as
Hannah Pomeroy continues to lead the Wolves as she enters the week with an 8-3 mark and 3.60 ERA after holding opponents to a .286 batting average in 83.2 innings of work.
Williams has also seen significant time in the circle for WOU, posting a 5-7 record and 4.33 ERA in 66.1 innings of action.
Winners of seven straight, Simon Fraser currently stands in first-place in the league standings with a record of 11-9 overall and 7-0 in conference. The Clan hit the road for the first time in league play this week as Kaitlyn Cameron leads SFU with a .370 average, two home runs and 12 RBI.
Kelsey Hawkins leads a strong pitching staff as she has posted a 5-3 mark and 2.83 ERA in 54.1 innings of work. As a team, SFU ranks third in the conference with a 3.31 team ERA as SFU has allowed only four runs during their current winning streak.
Western Washington enters this week's league action with a mark of 12-10 overall and 4-4 in league play after falling in a doubleheader at SFU last week. The Vikings are led by Alexie Levin who is hitting .411 on the season with one home run and 19 RBI. Jenna DeRosier has seen most of the time in the circle for WWU as she sports a 6-3 record with a 3.20 ERA in 61.1 innings pitched.
Last season, WOU posted a 3-3 mark against Simon Fraser while winning the season series from the Vikings, 5-1.
Admission to this weekend's contests is $6 for adults and $4 for non-WOU students and seniors. WOU students, faculty and staff are admitted for free with a valid identification card.
Following this weekend's action, WOU will return to the field on Saturday, March 30, when the Wolves travel to Billings, Mont., for a doubleheader with Montana State Billings at 12:00 p.m.
